Tragic loss of Christiaan Scholtz

Christiaan Scholtz receiving an award from the Dean of Engineering, Prof Hansie Knoetze

We were shocked and greatly saddened by the tragic loss of Christiaan Scholtz. Christiaan was a student in our department until his graduation last year. He was highly respected as a kind, considerate and sincere person and an outstanding student and his passing is felt deeply by staff and students alike.

Christiaan consistently shined throughout his academic career, achieving cum laude status every year. He received several awards in recognition of his academic excellence including the top award as the student with the highest average over four years of study in Chemical Engineering. Christiaan also excelled in sports, participating in university athletics at international level, and in student leadership, participating as a member of the University Student’s Council. Yet he remained modest throughout.

Christiaan also gave much back to the broader community. His willingness to serve through his involvement in activities and forums such as a missionary camp in Botswana and Nature Reserve Volunteer Wildfire Services speaks volumes for his compassion and commitment to his community.

In the department, we remember this exceptional young man with fondness and admiration. It was a privilege to have him in our classes and in our laboratories. Our heartfelt condolences are extended to his father, sister, family and friends.

The loss of Christiaan is also felt overseas, in the educational community of Rice University.
