Loss of a dear colleague

AJ1_3795webVincent Carolissen passed away suddenly due to a massive heart attack on 26 December 2014. His passing has left a space in the department that will be hard to fill – his humour, humility, loyalty, kindness and willingness to go the extra mile for anyone are sorely missed. Vincent was only 56 years old but his youthful demeanour, energy, ready smile and zest for living were those of a man many years younger.

He started his career at the Department in June 1990, as an Assistant, rising to Senior Assistant by 2007, and then to Junior Technical Officer in 2014. The variety of tasks Vincent handled made him the go-to man in the department. It do not matter if it were mail to be collected, confidential documents to be delivered, extra help on a Saturday or a broken practical to be fixed just minutes before the students were due to arrive, Vincent would do it.

Vincent always had the aspiration to obtain his National Senior Certificate, and saw the opportunity to do so when his son, Brandon was in Grade 12 in 2007. The following year Vincent was successful, taking a wide range of subjects that included Mercantile and Criminal Law. It was typical of Vincent that he would take on such a challenge and succeed and he was a true inspiration for many of us. In his personal life Vincent was just as multi-facetted – a keen sportsman in his youth, a sport coach to the community, and active in local community politics.

Vincent Carolissen was a role model for how to live life and we miss him greatly.
